OUR SAFETY HEROES.
Our crash test dummies do a lot of work to make sure MINI drivers can have the safest fun on the road. Rigorous testing ensures that passengers and pedestrians are equally protected by the most sophisticated safety features available. With active and passive systems working in sync.
Rigid chassis.
The body structure of a MINI is rigid, but collapsible – essential for absorbing impact. It shields you at all times in the case of impact from the front, rear and side, or if the car rolls over. Using high tension steel, optimized for weight and rigidity, your MINI retains a sporty feel to the drive. Reducing body torque, making that super-tight handling even sharper.
Advanced Braking.
Advanced braking technology gives you total control over your MINI.
Anti-lock braking.
Latest-generation, four-sensor, anti-lock brakes allow you to stop quickly even on slippery roads.
Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).
Automatically distributes braking force between wheels to suit the driving conditions, as well as your MINI’s current weight distribution.
Cornering Brake Control (CBC).
Taken a turn a little too quickly? CBC improves stability on cornering at speed.
Brake Assist.
Helps you stop faster in emergency situations, by speeding up the process and minimising the braking distance.
Three levels of control.
Three different driving modes have been engineered to keep you safe at all times, while allowing you as much (or as little) control as you want.
Dynamic Stability Control.
Stability control (DSC) is proven to reduce accidents. Intelligent sensors detect if you’re veering even slightly off course. DSC then activates to adjust the engine torque, and applies brake force to individual wheels where needed. You’re in safe hands.
Dynamic Traction Control.
Traction Control (DTC) provides the best possible driving force on every surface, even slick or sandy ones. It also restores power to the engine sooner than DSC, and lets the car slide a bit before correcting its course, which is kind of fun if you’re into your driving thrills.
Electronic Differential Lock Control.
Lock control (EDLC). If you’re a confident driver, and want full engine power with near-complete control, you can switch off DSC and DTC. But MINI still keeps you safe. EDLC kicks in when needed, to prevent slip and stop wheel-spin during aggressive cornering and acceleration.
Safe to the core.
From technology-intelligent headlights and airbags, to tyres that keep running even when flat, your MINI is ready to protect you at all times. Take a tour of more safety highlights.
Runflat tyres.
No need to fear the dreaded flat tyre anymore. Optional Runflat tyres are designed to keep their shape in the event of a puncture. Made with heat resistant rubber, with specially reinforced side walls, they let you drive up to 150 km at 80 km/h so you can get to a location where the wheel can be fixed.
Dynamic break lights.
If you ever have to emergency brake, these brake lights will start to flash, alerting the vehicles behind you. Your hazard warning lights then automatically activate to help defuse the critical situation even further.
Fast airbags.
Every MINI hardtop comes with a whopping six airbags. They’re super-fast, ‘smart’ airbags with safety sensors. These sensors constantly monitor the driver and front passenger position, as well as seatbelt use and impact severity, and then use this to control how fast the airbags inflate. Clever, huh? Usually the side-impact airbags are set in the door, but a MINI has them in the seat so that they open in exactly the right spot, no matter where your seat is. The side-curtain airbags also hide a nifty trick. Set in the middle of the roof on each side, they stay open for longer than conventional airbags to protect against multiple collisions and flying glass. You’re cushioned from every angle in a MINI.
Automatic Stability Control + Traction (ASC+T).
ASC+T prevents the front wheels from spinning, which guarantees ideal starting conditions and plenty of traction.
Adaptive LED Headlights.
Optimum light on straights and bends alike. Optional bi-xenon LED headlights give you crisp visibility even in the dark or poor weather, and swivel into the direction of the road to illuminate what’s round the corner. They also adjust their angle to the road based on your MINI’s speed and load-weight. These beauties even clean themselves with retractable power washers, maintaining their crystal clear visibility.
Flexible rear axle.
The multilink rear axle allows each wheel to react independently. So an uneven road surface won't affect the entire chassis − and your drive stays smooth.
